Soapberry Hairstreak

Soapberry-large-webSoapberry Hairstreak (Phaeostrymon alcestis)

This little hairstreak has only been documented once at the Nature Center. It was photographed in early July late in the afternoon.

The larval foodplant (Western Soapberry [Sapindus saponaria var. drummondii]) is quite common in the region, so this beautiful little butterfly is probably fairly widespread. The males patrol soapberry trees looking for females from early afternoon to dusk.
