Milkweed Butterflies

Monarch
(Danaus plexippus)
Queen
(Danaus gilippus)

Milkweed butterflies are large, black, orange, and white butterflies whose larvae feed on milkweeds. Perhaps the most well-known butterfly of all, the monarch, is a milkweed butterfly.

Both the monarch and the queen are frequently seen at the Nature Center, nectaring on flowers in the botanical gardens. The queen is by far the most common and can often be seen in great numbers on lantana and kidneywood during the late summer.
