The Checkered White (Pontia protodice) is the only white recorded at the Nature Center so far. These butterflies are quite common and can been seen along the roadside and in the botanical gardens almost year-round. Their markings are quite variable depending on the season (summer or winter) and the sex of the butterfly. Females tend to be more heavily marked than males.
Larval hostplants in this region include Lepidium lasiocarpum (hairypod pepperweed) and most likely plants in the genera Arabis, Descurainia, Sisymbrium, and Thlaspi.
