Groups of Less Than 20 Students
Do you have less than 20 students? Perfect!
Step 1
Choose one of the following programs:
Modesta Canyon Hike
Learn about the amazing diversity of Chihuahuan Desert flora, fauna, geology, and geography during this hike down into Modesta Canyon. We will look at some interesting plants and animals and discuss their desert adaptations. We’ll explore a desert spring and take in some incredible views. Be warned, this fun and exciting hike is strenuous and requires about 1.75 miles of walking.
Water in the Desert
Water is a precious resource in the desert. Learn about the importance of water in a desert ecosystem as we discuss the water cycle, aquifers, and where water goes after it rains. Students will use scientific instruments to conduct water-testing experiments and will discover life in a desert spring habitat. Finally, we will discuss how living organisms have adapted to a desert environment where water is scarce.
Plant and Animal Adaptations
An introduction to the plant and animals of the Chihuahuan Desert region will lead into an outdoor adventure as we wander through the botanical gardens. How do plants and animals survive the arid environment and lack of substantial water? We’ll look at fuzzy leaves, desert holes, and other unique adaptions of our desert inhabitants as we explore the area.
Field Investigations and Research Techniques
What is the scientific method? What does a biologist do? This program will introduce students to the life and work of a biologist, teach them about the scientific method, provide hands-on training, and the opportunity to be engaged in the secret life of the outdoors. We will provide an introduction into several different field technqiues for collecting data on plants, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. We may practice small rodent collecting with Sherman live traps, reptile collecting with herp arrays, and plant-animal surveys using transect lines.
Chihuahuan Desert Mining Heritage Exhibit
For over 10,000 years, natural resources have been mined from the Chihuahuan Desert region. In this program, your students will be introduced to the history of mining and what silver and copper look like straight from the earth. On the ore trail they’ll discover many other types of ores and learn about their uses. Using pulleys and levers, they’ll delve into the use of simple tools and how these simple tools were used to haul tons of ore out of a mine.
